Hello fellow Lovers! Guess what?! We’re almost halfway through the weekend and only “2ish” days from Fri-Yay! You’ve got this!
Since it’s Wednesday, it’s time for a review and boy oh boy do I have a “mouthful” to share with you, literally and figuratively 🙂 Yesterday I had the pleasure of my first experience and what I imagine will be the first of many more visits to Independence Fine Foods. Jeff and I live in South Austin and had no idea what we were missing out on just around the corner from home. Independence Fine Foods is a casual dining restaurant located in an unassuming strip mall off Slaughter and Manchaca in South Austin, TX, across the street from Indian Roller, a super rad “hole in the wall-ish” bar that you should make your way to. I promise you on entering Independence Fine Foods there is nothing unassuming about this gem! This restaurant delivers locally sourced, fresh, healthy, scratch-made selections that are well thought out and amazingly executed. We were immediately greeted with a warm smile and the great smell of fresh-baked breads. My eyes were held captive by the baked goods encased near the order counter. Before I had even decided on my lunch I was ordering the house made cinnamon roll and orange brioche.
Just look at ’em, could you deny your mouth the pleasure of these fresh-baked delights?! I think not.
Let’s move into our actual lunch shall we? Jeff and I wanted to try everything but you know, we can’t always get our way. We opted for just a few items…. The PORK BELLY BANH MI, House cured roasted Pork Belly, pickled carrots and jalapeno, cucumbers, radishes, cilantro, with your choice of garlic mayo or Sriracha aioli, served on a House made baguette, the BREAKFAST PANINI (served all day), Peppered bacon, Vital Farms Pasture Raised Eggs, Baby Spinach, Roasted Red Peppers and Provolone Cheese Grilled on a House made Focaccia, The SALMON CROQUET, Local Dill, Lemon, Egg, Breadcrumb, Mayo, and Dijon, and a CHICKEN EMPANADA, Roasted Dark Chicken, Green Chiles, Cheddar, Cumin, Chili Powder, and Onion. Notice how you can see exactly what’s in your food?! ALL the ingredients are always listed here. No fillers, additives. Just all natural goodness!
I’m told that the owners are brothers and both have a background in culinary. One brother runs the front of the house, the other runs the back of the house, and together they run a copacetic and well oiled machine. Part of this team is an amazing Pastry Chef Kyle McKinney (pictured below sitting in front of mostly eaten desserts) once Pastry Chef at Austin’s well-known Barley Swine. Chef Kyle provides Independence Fine Foods daily with not only fresh-baked breads but some absolutely delicious dessert options.
Our “diabetic shock” began with The MILK CHOCOLATE POT DE CREME, Egg, Cream, Sugar, Cocoa, Milk Chocolate, Coffee, Butter, and Flour (Tastes like an adult Jello Pudding “Snack Pack” on steroids) The BLUEBERRY UPSIDE DOWN CAKE, Blueberries, Flour, Butter, Brown Sugar, Cream, Egg, Milk, Baking Powder, Lemon, The HAZELNUT CRUNCH, (almost too pretty to eat) Brownie, Hazelnut Corn Flake, a Caramel Cremeux, and House made “Coco Pebbles”, The BANANA PUDDING, Roasted Banana Pastry Cream, House made Vanilla Wafers, Lime Marinated Bananas, Topped with Housemade Whipped Cream, and the final nail in our “diabetic shock” was The surprising (not so surprising from Chef Kyle) CEREAL MILK ICE CREAM, topped with “Cap’n Crunch”
Ok so we went a little crazy and our eyes were waaay bigger than our stomachs. We immediately fell deep into food comas.

EVERYTHING was delicious! and you should give Independence Fine Foods a try NOW! I’ll be honest though I’m pretty bummed I didn’t get there early enough to partake in the breakfast menu, if you follow me, you’d know breakfast foods are my favorite. They also have so much more to offer, fresh made salads, an evening carving station, Cuvee Coffee, and even aguas frescas. There will definitely have to be another trip, or 2, or several, and possibly another blog in it for you, work is work after all and I’m willing to compromise my waist for the greater good.
