We recently had the extreme pleasure of trying out Royal Jelly in Austin, Texas. Let me tell you I was definitely not ready for this Jelly 😉 .Royal Jelly is recently under new ownership with Evan Garrett and a new Chef Jason Salas. Chef Jason Salas has been in the food industry for a majority of his career, whether it be cooking, consulting, or food blogging, so it is easy to state that he has a passion for food. Chef Jason’s passion for food most definitely shines through in his food.
Pictured above we have delicious house-made lamb meatballs Bolognese topped with house-made creme fraiche and fresh basil plated next to a fresh greens salad. This is sitting beside a delicious meatball grilled cheese with a side of perfectly seasoned house-made french fries.
The guacamole is perfectly simple and delicious and lets the avocado shine through, which is my favorite kind of gauc. paired with house-made crispy tortilla chips that are made daily. Now let’s get to my favorite thing on the menu thus far, the Duck Poutine. Y’all this Poutine (pictured above in the center) totally rocked my socks and I would go back to Royal Jelly just for it. The Poutine has delicious and flavorful duck weaved in house-made french fries with cheese curds and melty American cheese and brown duck gravy. This Poutine is a beautiful thing.
For my cherry on top I enjoyed a refreshing Paloma bottled in recycled re-purposed Topo Chico bottles. It is so kitschy and cute that I can’t believe I have never seen this done before.
Royal Jelly offers “Whiskey Burger Wednesday’s” I’m told every Wednesday a different “featured”burger will be offered with a side of the house-made french fries at $7.00 and Whiskey Old Fashions for $3.00, from 7pm-10pm. Happy Hour is offered Tuesday-Saturday from 4pm-7pm with $2.00 off all food, $4.00 pearl snap,$2.00 Lonestars, $2.00 off all wine, $5.00 Moscow Mule. Brunch will be offered every Sunday from 11am-3pm and I am definitely looking forward to checking it out soon.
New Owner Evan and Chef Jason are helping to turn Royal Jelly’s menu on its head with a fresh outlook and great ideas breathing new life into this restaurant and bar. I will admit I was hesitant to check Royal Jelly out as the past reviews aren’t great and the previous menu seemed to ride the line of confused and just (in my opinion) odd. With new blood and an insurgence of curious “influencers” and bloggers like myself, I think that Royal Jelly is off and running in a great direction.
Chef Jason says he still has a long way to go and I for one am looking forward to enjoying the ride. Go check them out and tell ’em I sent ya!
